Human Body Wrap

extra photos

For this project my model was covered in newspaper paper mache style.  I wanted to outline her human features while making her look surreal. I decided to position my model on the concrete to represent the delivery of newspapers.

Ana Mendieta was the inspiration for my piece. She is known for incorporating the human body, using either herself or a silhouette of herself, in natural settings. This is why I chose to position my model on the ground.

This piece was a challenge to create.  Not only was I working outside in 95 degree weather, I was also wrapping my model in wet newspaper.  In addition, I was delayed several times by tourists who stopped to take pictures of me and watch what I was doing.

Big thanks to my friend Libby for modeling

Memento

This project was based on an important memory or experience one had. My memento was based off of my memory of an experience my family and I had; getting chosen to open Disney’s Magic Kingdom park. My family decided to go to the Magic Kingdom one morning and as we were walking through security a cast member came up to us.  She loved how the four of us were dressed in gator shirts because the Florida Gators had a big game that day.  She loved our team spirit even though she was a fan of the team the Gators were playing that night. She asked us if we wanted to be the first family in the park and open the park.  Of course, being big Disney fans we said yes.  This experience is something that not a lot of families get to experience, which is why I wanted to incorporate this memory with this project.

Only 3 materials were allowed to be used for this project. I used wood, and 2 different colors of paint, orange and blue. These materials helped me create a Sculpture that represented my family and Disney.  The circles represent not represented Mickey Mouse and the colors signify the Florida Gators, which were the shirts my family and I were wearing at the time. I decided to add a cake like structure at the top of the sculptor to symbolize Cinderella’s castle at the park we were opening that day, and the shaved curled wood pieces represent confetti.

Here are some photos of that day:

Marble Run

For this project we were asked to with create a track for a marble to run down, a marble run. I created multiple turns as well as falls for the marble to run down.   When the track is complete, the marble has to run down the track, it has to work.  The inspiration for the track was based off of a wooden roller coaster. Getting the track to stand while using small pieces and getting it to work was a real challenge, but I got it to work.  The use of negative space played a big part in building the structure of the track.

Janine Antoni Video Interview Response

All of Janine Antoni’s works demonstrates thoughtful and meaningful ideas, but I think Antoni’s work relates to her identify in some way or form because she wanted to incorporate herself and her body in her work.

Antoni’s work that represents an umbilical cord represents herself and those who are close to her.  What stands out is that she uses a rope to tie those who are close to her into the piece.  It’s very interesting how others, the people closest to Antoni, also created things to help put into the object to represent themselves.  How she’s adding her friends and family is really inspiring because she found a unique way to add those people into a piece.

While making the rope, Antoni thought about how it would be interesting to walk on the rope, therefore she taught herself how to tight rope.  I admire this idea because Antoni is thinking of ways to use herself to interact with her piece.  The rope represented her life, and the people who are in her life, so it was interesting how she decided to go back to the Bahamas, and tight rope on the beach outside of the house, which she grew up.

I really admire how Antoni’s immerse herself into her work.  How she used herself in multiple ways allowed her work to bring on a whole different meaning.  This allows her to think in different ways because she lets her work bring her to other pieces.  If it’s the rope project, to learning to tight rope, to allowing her to then think about a piece about falling.
