Masking Tape Shoe

We were asked to take a pair of shoes and recreate that pair of shoes out of masking tape.  This was an interesting assignment because it allowed us to use a different medium and create an object that we use in our daily life, a shoe.  There wasn’t a set in stone was of doing this, except for looking at the details of the shoe and doing it as you went along.  Taking the shoelaces off of the shoe to get a better feel for the shoe was a good idea which I used multiple times to really connect with the shoe.

Soap Carving

For this project we had pick out a plastic animal and create two realistic carvings of the animal out of soap.  I chose my favorite animal, a pig.  The soap animal had to replicate the plastic animal with the same proportions.  Now carving out of soap sounds easier than it actually was, it was a real challenge working with the soap trying not to carve off too much.

So the best one of the two soap carvings was chosen to stay as it is, and the other was to be manipulated and changed so that it doesn’t look like the animal it started off to be.

Human Body Wrap

extra photos

For this project my model was covered in newspaper paper mache style.  I wanted to outline her human features while making her look surreal. I decided to position my model on the concrete to represent the delivery of newspapers.

Ana Mendieta was the inspiration for my piece. She is known for incorporating the human body, using either herself or a silhouette of herself, in natural settings. This is why I chose to position my model on the ground.

This piece was a challenge to create.  Not only was I working outside in 95 degree weather, I was also wrapping my model in wet newspaper.  In addition, I was delayed several times by tourists who stopped to take pictures of me and watch what I was doing.

Big thanks to my friend Libby for modeling

Memento

This project was based on an important memory or experience one had. My memento was based off of my memory of an experience my family and I had; getting chosen to open Disney’s Magic Kingdom park. My family decided to go to the Magic Kingdom one morning and as we were walking through security a cast member came up to us.  She loved how the four of us were dressed in gator shirts because the Florida Gators had a big game that day.  She loved our team spirit even though she was a fan of the team the Gators were playing that night. She asked us if we wanted to be the first family in the park and open the park.  Of course, being big Disney fans we said yes.  This experience is something that not a lot of families get to experience, which is why I wanted to incorporate this memory with this project.

Only 3 materials were allowed to be used for this project. I used wood, and 2 different colors of paint, orange and blue. These materials helped me create a Sculpture that represented my family and Disney.  The circles represent not represented Mickey Mouse and the colors signify the Florida Gators, which were the shirts my family and I were wearing at the time. I decided to add a cake like structure at the top of the sculptor to symbolize Cinderella’s castle at the park we were opening that day, and the shaved curled wood pieces represent confetti.

Here are some photos of that day:
